About the company

Stories that cross cultures and carry feeling.

GK Makwana Films is an independent Australian film production company founded by filmmaker, writer-director, music composer, and lyricist Girish K Makwana.

The company was born from a long creative journey — first through music, rhythm, performance, and composition, and later through film, documentary, and international screen storytelling.

Based in Melbourne, GK Makwana Films carries a strong creative connection between Australia and India. Its work is shaped by Indian classical music, lived experience, migration, cultural memory, and a deep interest in the emotional truth of human life.

Girish K Makwana

Girish K Makwana is a filmmaker, writer, director, music composer, lyricist, performer, and polio survivor based in Melbourne, Australia.

Born in Gujarat, India, Girish began his creative life through music. Rhythm, performance, and Indian classical training became the foundation of his artistic voice before he moved into film and screen storytelling.

His journey as a polio survivor is not presented as a story of sympathy, but as a story of strength. For Girish, limitation was never the end of the story — it became part of his life journey and the fire behind the work.

From music to cinema

Music remains at the heart of GK Makwana Films.

Before cinema, Girish’s creative life was shaped by tabla, Indian classical music, rhythm, and collaboration with musicians from different traditions.

This musical background gives his filmmaking a particular rhythm. He approaches scenes not only through image and dialogue, but through silence, breath, movement, sound, and emotional timing.

For GK Makwana Films, music is not decoration. It is part of the storytelling.
